The salty language in Salt: Grain of Life (Columbia University Press) is not coarse. Rather, it sprinkles the reader with salt- invoking proverbs and metaphors from around the world. "He brings the salt once the egg is eaten," complain the Dutch. "Until East goes to West carrying a sack of salt," declare the Irish. "You are the salt of the earth," counseled Jesus, warning his flock of what happens if salt loses its savor.
