Winnipeg Jets' president Barry Shenkarow involves himself in every aspect of his NHL franchise.
The 36-year-old lawyer and real estate developer meets regularly with all department heads in the Jets organization to get an overview on everything from player personnel to marketing and finance.
"The department heads use me as a sounding board and I balance things between them," he says. "As chief operating officer, it's my role to make sure that each department does its job and keeps within its budget. If the Jets are going to win the Stanley Cup, I think we will require not only the best team on the ice, but also in the front office."
Barry says his hands-on approach does not extend to player trades and signings. But because he has a good rapport with Jets' General Manager John Ferguson, the two discuss these decisions.
