Luminarium: An Anthology of English Literature is aimed at students, educators, and devotees of English literature. The site was begun in 1996 by Anniina Jokinen, who has a BA in English from Temple University. Jokinen chose the medieval word for lantern as the name because her goal is that the site should be "a beacon of light in the darkness" to those looking for information about English literature and the authors considered to be its "luminaries." Authoritative sources such as The Norton Anthology of English Literature , The Encyclopaedia Britannica , and The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English are consulted for site content.
