Although open access journals have been around for a number of years, rarely do they garner as much recognition as their more established print counterparts. This is especially true in the humanities, where concerns over quality and a perceived lack of prestige and legitimacy have made scholars hesitant to embrace them. The resource reviewed here should do much to change that perception, at least in the field of philosophy.
Philosopher's Imprint is an online refereed journal of original papers made freely available on the internet. The journal is edited by Stephen Darwell and J. David Velleman, with the assistance and advice of an international Board of Editors. All editors and board members are affiliated with academic philosophy departments. While no mention is made regarding the role of the board members, it is assumed that they assist in the peer-review process within their areas of specialization. The journal is published at irregular intervals to the World Wide Web by the Scholarly Publishing Office of the University of Michigan Library, which has committed appropriate funding to ensure permanent access to the journal's archives.
As an open access journal, the stated mission of the Imprint is to promote an environment in which funds spent by academic libraries on expensive print and electronic subscriptions can be redirected to the free dissemination of scholarship via the internet.
