In a glossy magazine open on my desk an attractive woman in statuesque pose and a slinky black dress is gazing out, rather self-consciously seductively, against a background of black. This is Glasgow, "The New Black", being promoted as a stylish weekend tourist destination, like Barcelona or Copenhagen. In a two-page article in the Encyclopedia of 20' Century Architecture on Glasgow, Scotland, David Walters of the University of North Carolina comments: "Ironically, the main catalyst of (Glasgow's) urban renaissance at the end of the twentieth century was the rediscovery of the city's architectural heritage; the same building stock and urban pattern that had been under attack for the previous 60 years".
