Elsevier's Nautical Dictionary was last revised in 1978, and the intervening years have seen many changes in shipping. The new edition is a list of 13,462 nautical terms in English/American, and the equivalent terms in French, Spanish, Dutch, and German. There are indexes in the non-English languages so that any of them can be used as the entry language. The dictionary claims to consider seagoing ships from "launching to scrapping". It covers types of vessels, equipment, seamanship, navigation, seagoing staff, shipping, goods handling, trading, insurance, specific legal terms, weather and sea conditions. Major technical innovations are covered. There is, however, little terminology for nuclear powered vessels. Terms referring to sailboats are retained as such...
