Like any consumer, readers of Reference Reviews are more than likely to be interested only in the final product they are purchasing; consumers buying fridge-freezers tend not to be interested in the nuts and bolts of the product or how it was assembled, but in how efficient it is in keeping frozen peas fresh. Librarians, likewise, are purchasers of the end product as, in the main, what appears to be a perfect newborn baby. The gestation of this product, however, is far from uneventful; indeed, more than often, the original manuscript as presented for publication bears little resemblance to the final product as purchased by reference librarians. "So what?" I hear you mutter; it is certainly true that you do not have to have a knowledge of the latent heat of vaporization to enjoy a plate of mushy peas; you do not have to...
