"The Europa World Yearbook 1995 (36th edition)" is reviewed.
196/56 The Europe World Yearbook 1995 (36th edition) Europe Publications, London, 1995, 2 volumes, 3516 pp., ISBN 0-946653-96-8, L325
This yearbook is becoming almost impossible to review: this title contains so much information in its two volumes and is anyway such an absolutely staple diet for any self-respecting reference library, large or small, that comment seems almost superfluous. The two volumes are virtually a reference library in themselves, unrivalled for their range and accuracy By this, the 36th edition, the publishers have had plenty of practice in getting the title right and refining its contents: if this is not the perfect reference work it must be close to it.
The mixture should be well known to our readers: two large volumes cover international organizations and then every country of the world alphabetically. I am not certain what is the more useful feature: the excellent up-to-date introductions to the recent history, politics and current affairs of each country or the statistical and directory sections. The statistics are derived from various national and United Nations sources and are as accurate and recent as possible (not that that always says too much given the nature of statistical gathering and reporting as a sometimes highly political exercise). The directory gives its usual superb coverage, so you need look no further if before your trip to Belorus you need to know: names and addresses of the country's ministers; its political parties; what embassies there are; the address of the Supreme Court; the details of churches operating in the country; the main daily newspapers and other periodicals; publishers; banks, stock exchanges, etc.; trade organizations; transport bodies and the tourist office. All that (and often more) is here, and the same for every country in suitable detail. The publishers manage to keep up with a changing world, especially in the former Soviet Union, although every country has been thoroughly updated.
For the sheer amount and accuracy of its information, L325.00 is not an unfair price even though it might seem a large sum. Most libraries will recoup that cost in staff and user time by locating important information easily. This yearbook remains quite essential to any reference collection.
