Honor and Harry Maude pioneered anthropological study of Ocean Island with "The social organization of Banaba or Ocean Island, Central Pacific" (Journal of the Polynesian Society, Vol. 41, 1932, pp. 262-301). As phosphate extraction inexorably destroyed the viability of the island's indigenous economy, it was Harry Maude who negotiated purchase of a new home for the Banabans: the island of Rabi in Fiji.
