Inspired by screen goddess Rita Hayworth, out playwright Edwin Sanchez crafts a play to honor her Latina sex appeal
"I've always felt like I've been on the outside," muses playwright Edwin Sanchez-or Eddie, as friends call him. "I've always felt that being gay and Hispanic has put me there."
Sanchez has funneled that feeling of isolation into his work-which often depicts characters struggling with sexuality and race. One of his first plays, 1993's Trafficking in Broken Hearts, features a Hispanic hustler who grapples with his feelings for two conflicting and equally conflicted men. His 1995 play, Clean, follows a Catholic priest and a 10-year-old Cuban boy as they pursue an impossible, unconsummated love.
