To investigate the speed-accuracy trade-off in an applied sport setting, 16 children ages 6 to 11 were solicited to perform floor hockey shots. Task demands emphasized either the development of accuracy or the development of velocity. Repeated measures ANOVA indicated that practice sessions were effective in facilitating skill improvement. Subjects subsequently completed a post-test requiring a combination of speed and accuracy. A multivariate analysis of variance revealed that emphasis on velocity during practice resulted in greater performance on a task requiring both speed and accuracy. Findings appear to confirm the presence of a speed-- accuracy trade-off with respect to skill acquisition, and suggest that accuracy demands may impede the development of efficient motor patterns.
Afin d'investiger l'echange precision-vitesse dans le cadre d'un sport applique, nous avons convoque seize enfants agnes de six a onze ans pour executer des tirs au buts de hockey. Les exigences de l'epreuve appuyerent soit sur le developpement de la precision soi sur le developpement de la velocite. Des mesures "ANOVA" repetes indiquerent que les sessions d'entrainement furent efficaces en facilitant l'amelioration de l'automatisme. Par la suite, les sujets acheverent un examen ulterieur exigeant la combinaison de la vitesse et de la precision. Une analyse avariables multiples revela que l'appui sur la velocit6 au cours de l'entrainement a donne un resultat meilleur dans une epreuve qui eut exige a la fois la vitesse et la precision. Les conclusions semblent confirmer la presence d'un echange precision-- vitesse par rapport a 'acquisition d'automatisme moteur, et elles suggerent que les exigences de pecision puissent empecher le developpement des caracteristiques moteurs et efficaces. To date, research on the speed-accuracy trade-off has generally been confined to laboratory investigations of temporally constrained tasks. These investigations have generally been limited to adult populations, do not assess the speed-accuracy trade-off with respect to skill development, and typically bear little resemblance to real-world sport skills. The present investigation sought to address this situation by examining the nature of the speed-accuracy trade-off in an applied context. This study examined the impact of practice emphasizing speed versus accuracy upon skill acquisition, and the implications for sport skill instruction.
