Cabletron Systems, Inc. this week is expected to roll out an Ethernet switching module for its current intelligent hubs that will offer a glimpse into the future of the company's product line.
The seven-port Ethernet Switching Media Interface Module (ESXMIM) will be the first product based on the company's Secure Fast Packet Switching (SFPS) technology--the cornerstone of the next-generation hub Cabletron is expected to deliver in the first quarter of 1994.
SFPS is a connection-oriented switching scheme that will seamlessly switch traffic between different packet-based networks, including Ethernet, token-ring and Fiber Distributed Data Interface nets. It will also allow users to create secure work groups and minimize local routing.
The ESXMIM resides in the company's Multi Media Access Center hub and offers six Ethernet switching ports that each can support dedicated 10M bit/sec links. In addition, the module supports one Bridge Router Interface Module port, providing bridge/router services and uplinks to FDDI, wide-area or Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATMI networks.
