InterPlan, one of the most important shows in the commercial interior planning and design industry and the largest contract furnishings exhibition in the Northeast, has moved from the New York Coliseum, its location of two years, to New York's Jacob Javits Convention Center. This year, the show will take place October 29-31.
InterPlan is co-sponsored by Miller Freeman, Inc., the world's largest trade show management company, and Designer's Saturday, a regional trade and marketing association. The show enables facility managers, corporate end-users, architects, and contract interior designers to obtain the latest industry information. In addition to contract furniture, attendees will have the opportunity to view facility planning and design management software, commercial carpets and fibers, wallcoverings and solid-surfacing, lighting, and ergonomic accessories displayed at more than 700 expected booths. The attendance, last year counted at 10,043, is expected to top 12,000 this year. With Batimat NA, attendance is estimated at 15,000.
The education program is organized into three tracks-Facilities Management, Interior Design, and new this year, Hot Topics. Led by a variety of industry professionals, sessions cover everything from carpeting to contracts, alternative officing to the Internet, and are CEU-accredited.
Each day of the show, from 9:00-10:00 a.m., will open with a keynote speaker. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani will welcome attendees to New York, Wednesday, October 29, with "Designing and Building the City of the Future." Thursday, October 30, will feature Ellen Albert, AIA, vice president of planning and design, MTV Networks. Her talk, "The Role of Design at MTV Networks," will look at the development of facilities at MTV and the implication it has for design and facility management professionals. On Friday, October 31, Nick Luzietti, AIA, IIDA, principal, director of interior design, VOA Associates, Inc., will present "Viewing Cinema as a Design Influence." Luzietti will examine the creation, elements, and spirit of fine design in the cinema and its relationship to the process of interior design.
InterPlan week also offers a number of special events, such as the IIDA Product Design Awards and the InterPlan Exhibit Design Awards. Designer Saturday, Inc.'s Annual VIP Reception and Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is scheduled the night of Wednesday, October 29 and will be preceded by the "Pre-Met Fete" at the A&D Building.
