By late morning on this past Tuesday, Faneuil Hall Marketplace pushcart employee Ivonne Garcia had made exactly one sale worth $4.20 in the more than one hour that she had been open for business.
Garcia's salary at the Magnetic Chef pushcart is $8 an hour. She's had trouble covering it lately, and one (lay last week she didn't sell a single magnet from 4-9 p.m.
Things are just as bad a few carts down at designsbysandra, a business that sells custom-made bags and accessories. Manager Barbara McGrillen estimates sales have plummeted 70 percent since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.
Pushcart vendors say those numbers are common to most, and restarurateurs report being similarly affected at the tourismdriven locale that suddenly finds itself bereft of tourists.
