Recently, high speed broadband access service is in focus all over the world and FTTx especially is getting rapidly deployed globally. FTTx is sharing of the bandwidth between subscribers and each FTTx system is supporting more than thousand subscribers. In that sense, total cost of ownership (TCO) is very important for FTTx operation. Of course, CAPEX is important to investigate the first stage of business model but OPEX (installation and maintenance) also is the crucial point for the following stage. This article describes how useful RFTS is for maintenance service with the view point of TCO. Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) is responding with this useful tool for various customer requirements.
Principle of RFTS and System Configuration
RFTS is based on Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR). OTDR itself is a mature technology but SEI has integrated this technology together with field assembly connector including termination filter. RFTS is used in the wavelength from 1580nm through 1680nm. In the FTTx, actual data signal and 10G PON uses different wavelengths. (FTTx: 1310/1490/1550nm,...
