Roberta Weintraub was remembered Sunday as a tenacious, fearless and devoted Los Angeles leader, as hundreds gathered to say farewell to the longtime former school board member whose leadership cascaded into a robust career in public service.
An estimated 400 friends and colleagues came to the Los Angeles Police Academy, near Dodger Stadium, to remember that service, which before she died Jan. 1 at 83 spanned decades in L.A. as an educator, a philanthropist, a school board member and staunch law enforcement advocate.
“She spoke her mind,” said state Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, among many civic leaders and friends in attendance. “She listened deeply … was a master at bridge building … for a better LA and particularly for our children. She was the best friend you could have.”
It was her tenacious voice as a leader that definitely left a mark among mourners, who remembered a woman who would not take no for an answer when it came to advancing what she thought was right.
