This substantial contribution to Namibian historiography is the product of a project called `Trees Never Meet, which secured major funding and organised a conference in Windhoek in August 1994 on Namibia in the first phase of South African rule. That phase ran from South African occupation in 1915 to the beginning of the international conflict over the status of Namibia, when South Africa's application to incorporate Namibia was turned down by the United Nations in 1946. Much of the book consists of revisions of papers presented at the Windhoek conference by younger scholars, most of whom had recently completed, or were about to complete, dissertations.
