Funding for the Public Broadcasting Service is a freeze-frame in the blur of federal spending cuts put forth by Republicans as taxpayer relief. But local concern about losses is crystal clear for General Manager Michael Walenta of PBS's WGVU-WGVK TV and radio stations. He's facing cuts of $800,000 during the next fiscal year -- an amount equal to 15 percent of station revenues.
And by 1998, budget plans in the House of Representatives call for total elimination of all federal appropriations.
The good news, said Walenta, is that "63 percent of our funding comes from our members. Another bit of good news is that one in 10 persons who watch PBS calls and makes a pledge. If we could simply raise that number to two...
