Abstract

This study examines the potential effect of an eight-week e-mail- and WhatsApp-based instructional treatment on 45 Jordanian EFL tenth-grade students' paraphrasing and summarizing skills. Three instruments were used for data collection: a pre-test, a post-test, and an interview schedule. The findings reveal statistically significant differences (at a= 0.05) in the participants' mean scores on the post-test in favor of those in the WhatsApp group, combined e-mail and WhatsApp group, and e-mail group, respectively. The findings also reveal that the treatment has a significantly higher effect of on paraphrasing than on summarizing. Several pedagogical implications and recommendations are put forth.
