Managed Care Resolutions, a New York company that takes over the hassle of resolving disputed medical claims for individuals and employers, has entered the Sacramento market.
It has hired a small healthcare billing service based in Sacramento, Medical Solutions of Northern California Inc., to handle tough claims nationwide.
"With the way managed care is going, this thing could take off with wheels of its own," said Larry Poore, who owns Medical Solutions. "It's so new, there's no way to predict, but if it takes off, we'd have to do a major expansion."
The company was started by a New York businessman named Moishe Lax, whose mother died from cancer about two years ago. Her insurer refused to pay her $30,000 bill. Lax did some research and found widespread dissatisfaction with the complicated and often unwieldy dispute-resolution methods offered by health plans. He's used about $500,000 of his own money to start the business, said chief operating officer Wolfgang Klamp.
People in a dispute with, health plans can either try to solve problems on their own, turn to their human resource departments at work, or call independent hot fines for help. The idea at Managed Care Resolutions is to let people. familiar with the process take over the fight.
