For medical academics, 2007 marks an important anniversary as it is 50 years since Michael Balint published his seminal work on the consultation in general practice - The Doctor, His Patient and the Illness (Table 1). With primary care nurses increasingly consulting independently, the study of the consultation is now highly relevant to the nursing profession.
In this article, I have focused on the wellknown models of the consultation, a personal choice reflecting what I found useful as a postgraduate student and subsequently as a trainer, and even more importantly, in practice. These are described chronologically (Table 1), to appreciate that this is an evolving discipline; for this reason, I have given brief biographical details of authors where considered relevant.
