The Blues: From Robert Johnson to Robert Cray. By Tony Russell. New York: Schirmer Bks., 1997. 224p. acid free, $75 (ISBN 0-02-864862-5).
This latest addition to the rapidly expanding blues reference shelf is obviously a labor of love, but only the blues novice will find Russell's work truly useful in the long run. This slim volume, chock full of excellent black-and-white and color photographs, proposes to give the reader a feel for the full scope of the genre, rather than any depth within a particular style.
