Austin startup Surgient Networks Inc. has signed an exclusive contract with the Northwest Austin manufacturing plant of Milpitas, Calif.-based Solectron Corp. to produce Surgient's products.
The deal is significant for Surgient as it gears up to offer its first product for sale in the next few weeks. The 2-year-old company produces "boxes" that are used in data centers.
The boxes combine computing, networking and storage technologies to replace several machines used in data centers. By using Surgient's box, data centers eliminate servers and other machines while speeding up a user's ability to download bandwidth-intensive media.
Rao says Surgient decided to contract with Solectron for several reasons, including the company's new product introduction center. That center is designed to help companies, especially startups, make products that might require smaller manufacturing runs,
