Abstract

Image-based high-speed check processing is expensive. Although the entire banking industry is sold on the technology, the current economy and capitalization requirements are making even the big money center banks reconsider the estimated $10 million-plus expenditures. Vendor software development for the high-volume check image systems has been slower than expected. Currently, IBM Corp.'s high-speed image check processing project is behind schedule. Unisys Corp. has at least 6 customers for its InfoImage Item Processing System. For several years, banks have been using image technology to reduce paperwork in certain departments. In the coming year, banks will continue to implement image check processing pilots and install image processing in other business areas. As image technology moves forward, the need for standards becomes more critical. Unfortunately, standards are still lacking, both for image document processing systems and for high-speed image check processing.
