Julian, Calif.-based Quality Candy Co. purchased the Paducah hard candy business from Gilliam Candy Co. last month. In addition to acquiring assets such as the Gilliam Old Paduke stick product brand name from the 75-year-old, San Francisco-based confectioner, the company will also pick up specialized equipment used in the production of old-fashioned stick candies. The move "will bolster our position as one of the industry's largest hard candy manufacturers," said Pierre Redmond, founder and chairman of Quality Candy. As the largest hard candy manufacturer west of the Rocky Mountains, Quality Candy produces some of the oldest brand names in the industry, which include King Leo, Original Choco-Starlight and Original Spi-C-Mint.
