The most important contribution of SYSTOOL is the introduction of modern software development methods to the field of programmable systolic arrays (PSA), a promising parallel processor architecture. SYSTOOL combines the power of the C language with a powerful simulator to form a state-of-the-art, integrated environment for systolic array programming. The PSA concept is reviewed, the simulated processors are presented, and SYSTOOL's structure and features are described. SYSTOOL is believed to have an important role in making the PSA concept more popular and widely used. SYSTOOL currently is being used to develop a software library for the ASAP processor. It is also the primary training tool for teaching the PSA concept at Israel's Tel Aviv University.
