Abstract

An overview is presented of the basic ideas behind the design of the Construction Database Model (CDM) constructed according to the principles of semantic databases. The main goal of CDM implementation is to provide a general purpose computer-aided design (CAD) program environment that is capable of storing all kinds of information in the process of geometric design. When designing the CDM, the different approaches to CAD database design, in particular the work of Katz, Bahteja, Chang, Gedye, and Trijanto (1987), are considered, as well as the principles of semantic database models. The resulting implementation comprises unique ways of representing design objects and their construction process by introducing the idea of constructed object. The CDM is implemented in a Kons Base (Construction Database) environment originally developed to fit CAD applications.
