Ikanos Communications will demonstrate ADSL Discrete Multi-Tone (ADSL-DMT) traffic from a combined ADSL/VDSL chipset at Toronto's FS- VDSL meeting scheduled today through Thursday. The technology is intended to save carriers money by allowing the creation of a single line card that can switch between ADSL and VDSL, essentially expanding the range of services available from a DSL access concentrator without requiring hardware upgrades. In addition to supporting both services out of one platform--as opposed to requiring multiple line cards for multiple services, the programmable chipset will also allow carriers to migrate ADSL customers up to much faster VDSL service without a truck roll.
