A pair of North American PCS carriers--Sprint PCS {FON} and Canada's Microcell Telecommunications Inc. {MICTF}--officially inaugurated service in new markets yesterday (3/25). The CDMA-based network operated by Sprint PCS now includes the Washington/Baltimore major trading area--a market already covered by Sprint Sprectrum, the GSM-1900 operator that became a wholly owned subsidiary of Sprint PCS nearly two months ago. The CDMA network, which achieved operational status in January, overlays Sprint Spectrum's system, thus affording coverage across much of Maryland, the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia. With this portion of its footprint in place, Sprint PCS offers virtually contiguous coverage from portions of New England through the Mid-Atlantic states.
