Timing is everything.
In September 2005, Green Building Services became an independent consulting firm after five years operating within Portland General Electric. The switch, said firm principal Ralph DiNola, happened just as ideas of sustainable construction and operations began to widely catch on.
"Last year, it really hit, and it really came on strong toward the beginning of the year," he said. "The timing could not have been better. We were really poised for the mainstreaming."
In 2006, the now employee-owned company expanded into markets such as Northern California, Texas and Hawaii. Projects grew in size and scope. Staff size went from 15 to 25. The firm gained a board of directors made up of, and elected by, employees.
