ELMIRA - Rogert's Thesaurus might not list Welliver McGuire, Inc., as being synonymous with growth, but hang on - the next decade has just begun.
In little more than 10 years, the Elmira-based construction company's annual revenues have escalated to the $175million range, and this year's activities so far indicate that the company isn't slowing down any-year-end revenues are on track to break the $200-million mark.
While those numbers suggest tremendous growth, consider that, in 1989, company President Scott Welliver was named Small-Business Person of the Year by Chemung County Chamber of Commerce. Seven years later - and it remains so today - the construction firm became the largest in Central New York. Last year, it was ranked among the top 190 contractors in the nation by Engineering News-Record. That's a step up from number 268 in 1998. The trade magazine's 2000 rankings will be released in May.
Much of the growth can be attributed to the acquisition of McGuire Bennett, Inc. of Ithaca by Wellco, Inc. of Elmira, which reincorporated as Welliver McGuire in 1987 and pushed the...
