DETROIT - Ford Motor Co. said last week it will retire the Ford Thunderbird name once production of the 2005 vehicles ends in July.
The Thunderbird is built at Ford's Wixom, Mich., assembly plant. Since Ford launched the current version of the roadster as a 2002 model, more than 55,000 Thunderbirds have been sold, Ford said.
The original Thunderbird was launched in October 1954.
Ford said that the Wixom plant will continue to produce the Lincoln LS and Town Car and do the final assembly for the Ford GT.
