Palm Inc., Milpitas, Calif., has introduced two hand-held computers with new features that address what many mobile health experts identify as obstacles to greater use of PDAs in health care. The Tungsten T3 hand-held is Palm's first PDA that supports a high-resolution color screen in landscape mode, as well as the typical portrait mode. The computer offers increased data input flexibility and streamlined access to key features in either mode. The new screen display does away with the usual handwriting recognition area at the bottom, incorporating that space into the full viewing screen, which now contains a virtual handwriting recognition area. As a result, the T3 screen is about 50% larger than the screen on any previous Palm PDA. This larger screen addresses the issue of PDAs' small screen size, one obstacle many experts contend is blocking greater use of hand-helds in health care. Among other features, the Tungsten T3 also offers enhanced personal information management software and 64MB of RAM. The sharp increase in memory addresses another commonly identified obstacle to increased use of PDAs in health care: limited storage capacity. The new Tungsten E handheld, which uses the more common sized viewing screen, is designed for professionals looking for a hand-held in the Tungsten line but at a lower cost. It features a high-resolution color display, multimedia software and enhanced personal information management software.
