Misys Healthcare Systems has acquired claims clearing-house Payerpath Inc. for $49 million. Raleigh, N.C.-based Misys is a vendor of practice management/electronic medical records software for physicians, ancillary software for hospitals, and information systems for home health agencies. The company operates its own clearinghouse, called M. Transaction Services, and processes about 420 million claims and related transactions a year. Richmond, Va.-based Payerpath operates an Internet-based clearinghouse, handling about 50 million transactions annually. The Web-based service-which includes claims management software-will broaden the product offerings for Misys, which offers standalone claims management software. Misys will make Payerpath's claims editing capabilities and additional revenue cycle management services available seamlessly to its practice management clients, says Misys CEO Tom Skelton says. Payerpath also gives Misys access to small physician practices, particularly in rural areas, that don't have sophisticated practice management and electronic records software. Under the acquisition agreement, Payerpath will continue to operate in Richmond as a unit of Misys. James Brady will continue to lead Payerpath as president.
