Television has one principal measure of success or failure: How many people are watching your program?
By that measure, two groups of TV people should be very happy--the crews from KTUU's Channel 2 News and the starship Enterprise.
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" repeated its success as Anchorage's most-watched television program in the November survey conducted by the A.C. Nielsen Co. And the 6 p.m. Channel 2 News program was not only the city's top-rated newscast, it was among the half-dozen most-viewed programs overall.
"It's a matter of Anchorage demographics being what they are," said John Tracy, Channel 2 news director. "I think we have a younger than average population, a higher than average income, more professional people, more people who are interested in news than people in other markets."
For the first time since before television came to Alaska, Anchorage has no afternoon newspaper, with the Anchorage Times' move to a morning schedule. Tracy said he doesn't think that matters much. "Our numbers have been this strong before," he said. "It wouldn't appear the Times going to morning had anything to do with it."
