State environmental officials say this fall they will have compiled a new report appraising in detail the best available equipment and techniques for oil spill prevention and response.
The report being prepared by the Department of Environmental Conservation's Division of Spill Prevention and Response is the outgrowth of a conference held in Anchorage in late May. The gathering attracted oil spill equipment experts from as close as Anchorage and other locations in the United States, and as far away as Singapore and Norway.
"The idea there was best available technology," said Larry Dietrick, division director. "The strong point of the conference was the presenters. The presentations were all excellent. They did an excellent job answering questions from each panel of experts."
Most of the latest technology is already in use by oil spill response groups in Alaska, he said.
The conference was mandated by state statutes written into law in the late 1990s, requiring that DEC review and appraise technologies to meet response planning standards at least every five years.
