An analysis of Women's Image-Driven Identities and the Consequences Thereof.
Sut Jhally's documentary DreamWorlds II: Desire, Sex, and Power in Music Video introduces the "dreamworld" which exists in patriarchal ideology and is demonstrated repeatedly through the selection of music videos on MTV. In the "dreamworld," women are mere objects of adolescent male fantasy. Women are represented as tall, unnaturally thin, large breasted and, most importantly, possessors of an insatiable desire for sex with any partner who makes himself available.
Jhally argues that there are dangerous consequences in the male dominated industry of music video in which women are portrayed as idealized objects of desire. As a result, men and women, having been continually subjected to these unrealistic images of women, attain a distorted view of sexual relations. The "dreamworld" becomes blurred with reality,...
