SUMMARY
What makes Target a successful business? There are a number of reasons. I think the number one reason is the unique blend of product that the retailer offers to its customers. The company has differentiated themselves from other retailers by adding designer products. A number of famous designers have signed on with Target for selling their goods through the Target stores. How many stores have the ability to provide a shopper with the choices of a designer leather jacket, Tupperware, milk and a birthday card all in one trip? Target has also maintained a professional web site that has seen increased sales growth since it went live. The Target signature Visa card has also proved successful with pulling in money for local schools.
The Super Target stores carry groceries, as well as the usual Target products. More than 100 of these Super Target stores are currently in existence.
The company has one huge discount competitor in Walmart, but it also has competitors of a different sort, due to its mix of certain merchandise.
If the future is anything like the present, Target Corporation will sail through the years with loyal customers and increased sales. No one can totally predict the future, but this is a company that has been around for 40 years and I would venture to guess, will be around for another 40 years. The company is as solid and stable as is possible. According to the articles cited, management intends to keep the strategy intact.
TARGET CORPORATION - SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS STRATEGY
When it comes to business strategy, other retailers should take a lesson from Target Corporation. The company's strategy is "differentiating itself from competitors based on products that offer more style and a higher level of design." This has proven very successful for Target. Its sales are still soaring in these tough, economic times. Business strategy "deals with the present and focuses the firm on achieving and maintaining competitive advantage within a given product's marketplace."
