Abstract

Much of the scholarship surrounding women's place in society suggests that women's changing economic and social roles throughout the life-course, such as increased access to better education, paid workforce participation trends and gender-role expectations have contributed to a greater independence. Economic independence plays a crucial role in the complex issue of women's place in Western society and Dunn-Cane, Gonzalez and Stewart believe that this generation of men and women have 'expanded the economy more than any previous group, they represent the largest workforce ever' (1999:2).
