PUNE: The Anandnagar nullah that flows through the densely populated areas on Sinhagad Road, was successfully restored by city-based NGO Shrishti Eco-Research Institute (SERI) and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
SERI used the green bridge' technology that uses ecological process to absorb pollutants to restore the nullah. The technology has reduced the pollution level in the nullah to 70 per cent. The project, which was launched in February 2009, is still going on.
Sandeep Joshi, director, SERI, who has developed this technology and received a patent for it, told TOI that green bridge is a horizontal eco-filtration system made from local materials like sand, soil and bacterial mixture. "The ecological food chain is developed in this system. The pollutants become nutrients for bacteria and clean water flows out."
