In this revised dissertation (Aberdeen, 1992) Strauss examines the theme of the promise of the Davidic king and its fulfillment in Luke's christology. While Strauss recognizes that this is not the only christological motif in Luke-Acts, he argues that it is both prominent and important. The investigation is divided into three parts, with part one setting the stage. In the first chapter S. reviews recent research on the Davidic Messiah in Luke-Acts and lays out the methodology of his study (a combination of redaction-critical and narrative-critical approaches) and its plan. In chap. 2 he looks at the tradition of Davidic promise in the OT and its use in Second Temple Judaism and pre-Lucan Christianity. In this way, S. determines what concepts and constructs were available to Luke.
