JOHANNES NISSEN, New Testament and Mission: Historical and Hermeneutical Perspectives (Frankfurt am Main/Bern/New York: Lang, 1999). Pp. xii + 198. Paper $35.95.
Johannes Nissen, professor of NT Exegesis at the University of Aarhus, Denmark, published a book in Danish in 1996 that had the same content and outline as the present volume. The latter work contains a wider survey of recent literature and more references to the current scholarly debate, and it is directed to an international circle of readers.
The nine chapters begin with a reflection on biblical scholarship and missiology, and the treatment ranges throughout the NT: mission as disciple-making (Matthew) and crossing boundaries (Mark); the liberating mission of Jesus and the acts of the Spirit (Luke-Acts); being "sent" into the world (John); mission constrained by the love of God (Paul); the witness to powers and authorities (Colossians and Ephesians); hope and witness (1 Peter and Revelation). The final chapter treats NT perspectives and present challenges to mission, culture, and dialogue.
In general, this is an excellent book, carefully and attractively written by an author who is in touch with recent scholarship and concerned to speak to our world of today....
