Burgeoning development of the City of Morgantown's Wharf District continued March 3 with the start of construction of the city's newest parking garage.
The $6 million, 316 car garage is scheduled to be completed in September.
Motorists who have been using a graveled lot lined with parking meters will then drive through automated toll gates to enter the new garage, which will not have meters.
Parking fees will be paid into a machine that will accept cash or credit cards and will validate a ticket obtained upon entering the garage. The validated ticket will be used to lift exist gates.
The city's Parking Authority has arranged for temporary parking at the site of the demolished Climate Control building until construction of the new garage is completed.
The garage, which will be entirely paid for by user fees, is seen by city leaders as crucial to the Wharf District's further development.
This development has provided-so far-a $250 million business and occupational tax boost to city coffers, and has created a new skyline in the Wharf District.
