Actor Richard Bauer, stalwart of the Washington, D.C., theatre scene, died in March at the age of 59. Bauer joined the city's Arena Stage in 1966, and proceeded to interpret more than 100 roles-including Shaw's Henry Higgins, Shakespeare's Caliban and Candide's Dr. Pangloss-for the company. Director Jim Nicola, who worked with the performer, described him as "a genius." Bauer was married to actress Halo Wines.
Director Andre Ernotte, who staged productions in Princeton, Washington, D.C., New York, London, Paris and other locales, died in March at the age of 55. Ernotte, who was born in Belgium, was also a film and television director, as well as an author; his written works include the play Music Keeper, which he composed with his companion Elliot Tiber. Among the 13 productions Ernotte directed for New York's Vineyard Theater was Polly Pen's Christina Alberta's Father, for which he won a 1994 Obie award.
Playwright Sarah Kane died in February at the age of 28; she committed suicide in the London hospital where she was being treated for depression. The extraordinarily violent imagery in her plays-Blasted, Cleansed, Phaedra's Love and Crave-horrified many critics, but her supporters admired the challenging intensity of her vision, and she earned a wide audience in Europe.
