CD-ROM technology offers a durable, high-capacity medium which opens the multimedia doors for users.
A typical CD-ROM holds about 600MB of information. Newly emerging standards are being developed which may increase CD-ROM capacity to almost 7GB. CD-ROMs are capable of including such diverse multimedia such as games, books, software applications, music, and magazines. CD-ROM technology provides the means to offer graphics, sound, animation, video, and text to the user on a single medium. All of the various forms of data on a CD-ROM may be played simultaneously.
Popularity of both CD-ROM and the Internet are unquestioned. Sales of CD-ROM drives exceeded 15 million in 1994. Over 7.8 million drives are found in the home market alone. Internet usage is expected to continue to boom at an exponential rate.
In combining CD-ROM technology with Internet access technology, the multimedia doors open significantly wider for the user.
