In parallel with the explosion of data that is fueling the storage market the PC server market is expanding equally rapidly. Increasingly powerful PCs are available at a fraction of the price that they were only a few months ago. This price performance quotient is offering users the opportunity to run new, more powerful, and complex applications, such as imaging, that they would never have dreamed were possible.
This price erosion has led to an interesting fact. As more and more users store rapidly increasing amounts of data on personal computers that are decreasing in price and increasing in performance almost daily, the value of the data on the computer may shortly exceed the value of the hardware on which it resides!
These CPU hungry and, more importantly, data hungry applications need to be backed up, if only to provide an electronic insurance policy against a disaster. Bear in mind that if some sort of problem or disaster should occur, the loss of your documents may just be the tip of the iceberg!
What about the overall computing environment that you have toiled over to get just the way you like it? Fonts, operating systems, email, customized desktop set up, to name just a few. Think about it. How long did it take you to get your PC just the way it is today, just the way you like it? How long would it take you, with a new PC straight out of the box, to recreate that precise environment that you know and love?
OK, so you have toiled. You have reloaded all your application software. It didn't take too long to find all those disks. Next time try and write down where you put them and store that information somewhere safe! The new PC now has an identical look and feel to your old one. Now you need to restore your data so that you can resume productive work. That's just the scenario...
