With growing demand for high performance products, several companies have introduced Ultra2 SCSI products during the last few months, to offer significant cost/performance advantages and extend the well established SCSI product infrastructure. These products fall into three classes: Ultra2 SCSI host adapters, Ultra2 SCSI disk drives, and Ultra2 SCSI RAID systems. Ultra2 SCSI uses a low voltage differential (LVD) technology to double the burst rate of Ultra SCSI to 80 MB/second. Ultra2 SCSI increases the maximum cable length to 12 meters, providing increased flexibility in systems configuration. New Ultra2 SCSI products are also backward compatible with Ultra SCSI products, enabling migration of cutomers' installed product base. (See "SCSI Laying the Ground Work for Improved Performance," CTR, December 1997 and "New Storage Interfaces," CTR, July 1997.) Furthermore, the prices of the Ultra2 products are no more than small increments above their Ultra...
