The Tandberg SLR7 tape drive and Imation SLR7 tape cartridges from Tandberg Data ASA (Oslo, Norway), and Imation Corp., (Oakdale, Minnesota), are said to offer the best price and performance in the 20/40GB segment. The tape drive stores up to 40GB of data and features a 21.6GB per hour (6MB per second) transfer rate (capacity and transfer rate assume 2:1 data compression). Like previous SLR tape drives, its 5.25-inch half-height ensures easy integration and scalability. The SLR7 tape cartridges offer 40 GB of compressed storage capacity. Both tape drive and cartridge are said to provide a complete, data backup, file transfer and archiving solution for IT systems and network environments demanding high performance tape storage at an extremely affordable price. The tape drives are described as offering in-line compression, enabling hardware compression before entering the buffer, thus freeing buffer capacity, increasing data throughput and system performance. Coupled with the 8 MB buffer, time used for back-up/restore is kept to a minimum. The combined support of the SCSI Ultra2 Wide LVD/SE interface allows for maximum performance when connected to either an Ultra 2 wide single ended or LVD bus. MTBF is specified at 300,000 hours. It comes with a three-year limited warranty including a two-day Advanced Replacement Service when purchased through authorized Tandberg Data outlets. Estimated pricing: $749-$799 for the drive and $49 per SLR7 data cartridge.Tandberg Data also this spring introduced its SDLT220 tape drive, which is said to provide higher capacity, reliable data protection, faster data access and compatibility with previous product generations. It offers a combination of optical and magnetic technologies for high capacity and performance. It has 110GB of native storage capacity and a transfer rate of 11 MB/sec (220 GB at 22 MB/sec with 2:1 compression). Described as ideal for midrange computers, network servers, high-end workstations and mainframe environments running NetWare, UNIX, Windows NT, Linux or proprietary operating systems, it is intended for applications in automation, NAS and SAN environments. Pricing to be announced. www.tandberg.com
