BOULDER - There will only be one Lazy Dog Sports Bar and Grill in Boulder - for now.
A week before opening the new Lazy Dog on Pearl Street, owner Steven Ross decided to close the restaurant's prior location at 28th Street and Iris Avenue. Ross had considered keeping both locations open.
"In the end I felt like I would have two sports bars competing against each other," Ross said. "At this point, I'd rather concentrate on the downtown location."
Ross said there is a possibility that he might purchase the Iris Avenue Lazy Dog location and reopen the restaurant; however, that depends on the building's current ownership situation. Ross subleases the building from Purr's Restaurant Group Inc., which is currently facing bankruptcy.
"It's something that could take years to resolve," Ross said. In the meantime, the new Lazy Dog, on the corner of Pearl and 14th streets, offers several new features and is combined with another Ross restaurant, the Naked Fish, a seafood eatery.
The two restaurants take up about 12,000 square feet spread across three floors. The main floor covers 6,600 square feet with 180 seats for the Lazy Dog and 140 for the Naked Fish. The roof deck covers about 3,000 square feet with about 100 seats for both restaurants. A ground-level patio will provide another 45 seats outdoors. Finally to enhance the sports bar experience, the 2,500 square feet in the basement will feature a billiards hall with eight tables.
Ross said there is a big advantage in having both restaurants located side by side.
"This gives us the ability to provide the Naked Fish menu at the Lazy Dog," Ross said. "We'll still have the regular Lazy Dog menu, but this gives customers...
