Some say necessity is the mother of invention. So when new mom Susan Lavelle had questions about her child, she started an e-mail list to connect with other parents.
She then birthed startup Moxie Moms LLC, a company that provides discounts at affiliated retail shops for expecting and current parents in Westminster, Brighton, Denver, Golden and Boulder and Broomfield counties. The group also offers social, athletic and charitable opportunities for its members.
"It's surprising how fast it's taken off," said Chief Financial Officer Joe Lavelle of the new venture. "In October, we were hoping to have 500 members by the end of 2004, but we'll have 500 members by the end of the summer," he said.
However, Lavelle conceded that for Moxie to be more financially viable, he and his wife must focus on developing relationships with partner businesses and potential Web site advertisers. Susan also will package her retail background to some partner businesses in a consulting role. By 2005, the couple hopes Susan can do this full time.
The couple spent $5,000 in startup costs, which covered Web site research, marketing materials and legal fees for incorporation and trademarks.
